St. Paul Academy and Summit School seeks candidates for a Middle School Math Teacher. This position will begin in August of 2024.

About St. Paul Academy and Summit School:

St. Paul Academy and Summit School (SPA) is a coeducational, non-sectarian, college preparatory day school serving approximately 900 students in kindergarten through grade 12. Our two campuses are located approximately a mile apart in St. Paul, Minnesota, serving Grades K-5 on our Goodrich Campus and Grades 6-12 on our Randolph Campus. The school draws students from St. Paul, Minneapolis, and throughout the eastern and western suburbs.

About the Middle School:

The Middle School at SPA is a place where students in Grades 6-8 experience the transition from childhood to young adulthood safely and surrounded by adults who care. Our culture is defined by our warm and welcoming community, our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and our innovative and rigorous curriculum. The Middle School curriculum emphasizes wide-ranging exploration and skill development in specific disciplines, taught by teachers who understand and genuinely enjoy students at this age. Organization and accountability are emphasized, and students learn to take responsibility for managing their work.

In the Middle School, students are challenged to embrace new ideas and think independently. The classroom experience is based on increased academic rigor combined with increased freedom of choice and support for the social/emotional needs of young adolescents is provided using Developmental Designs for Middle School. Finally, the advisory system sets clear standards and expectations for individual behavior and community norms.

Position Description:

Candidates should bring experience in teaching middle school students across all foundational math content areas, including pre-algebra, geometry, and Algebra I; the ability to teach through Algebra II is preferred. Training or experience with Singapore math methods and standards-based assessments is preferred. Demonstrated experience working with adolescents is essential. Collaboration across disciplines and within the math department is essential for the success of the teacher as well as the program. Full-time Middle School teaching positions are typically made up of four classes and an advisory. Class sizes are typically capped at 16.

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree in math, math education, or a related field is required; a Master’s is preferred. We seek a candidate who has a demonstrated passion for mathematics and a track record leveraging this passion into effective practices that encourage students to think creatively, engage with ideas deeply, and lead with intellectual curiosity. As importantly, we seek candidates who are committed to developing and practicing cultural competence in their teaching and able to operate effectively in diverse environments while also interacting successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds.
